On 28 November, the Gothenburg Investment Banking Society (“GIBS”)’s Female Network arranged a trip for 19 female students to Stockholm – a day dedicated to insight, networking, and inspiring the participants to pursue a career in finance.
The one-day visit to the capital aimed to offer female students from Chalmers University of Technology and the School of Business, Economics, and Law at University of Gothenburg an opportunity to explore the dynamic business environments at SEB and ABG Sundal Collier, where the participants had the chance to network with professionals, meet representatives from various departments, and gain insights into the operations of leading financial institutions. The ABGSC Women in Finance Foundation was also a proud sponsor of the program, covering the transportation costs for participating students with the goal of making the activity more inclusive for students to attend.
As GIBS’ mission is to provide a platform for students to interact with investment banks, and ultimately prepare them for future careers within the industry, the student group’s main activities have traditionally been to facilitate a “Stockholm Investment Banking Week” and a “London Investment Banking Week” for its members. With the development of the GIBS Female Network, the group also seeks to inspire and encourage more female students to take the step into the finance industry, and as part of this work the “Stockholm Investment Banking Day” was introduced for the first time this year.
A big thank to Ly Tran, head of the Female Network at GIBS, and the other GIBS representatives, for coordinating a great trip to Stockholm designed to encourage more young women to pursue a career in finance and lower the barrier to entry. When asked about the background for introducing the “Stockholm Investment Banking Day”, Ly commented that: “The purpose of the activity will be to inspire students to pursue careers in finance, while also offering them a platform to network and mingle with professionals ahead of the application periods for Spring Week, internships, and full-time roles. Additionally, we believe this event will be an excellent way to introduce more female students, particularly those in their first and second years of their studies, to our annual Stockholm Banking Week in January, as well as next year’s GIBS Female Mentorship Programme.”
This is the second time the Foundation had the pleasure of supporting activities led by the GIBS Female Network, having earlier this year contributed to their female mentor programme; you can read more about it here. This spring the Foundation also caught up with Ly to chat about her thoughts on the finance industry; check out the full interview here.
