Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Kaja Norbye and I am from Oslo, Norway. This spring I completed my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah with a major in Finance. Before moving to the US, I spent five years as a professional alpine skier with the Norwegian National Ski Team, travelling the world competing in European- and World-Cup races.

What made you choose an internship in equity research at ABGSC?
I chose ABGSC because they are best-in-class at what they do, and an internship here is a unique opportunity to learn from the best.

Can you tell us about your experience so far?
My experience at ABGSC has been everything I hoped for and more. Thus far, I have been lucky to work with Daniel Vårdal Haugland and Åsne Helene Hustad Holsen, extremely skilled analysts with great expertise within their sector (Renewable Energy). Currently, I am writing an initiation of coverage report, which involves conducting in-depth research on a company and its position within the broader market. I have received great guidance combined with the freedom to explore (and make mistakes), which I believe is an invaluable learning approach.

What have you enjoyed the most so far?
So far, I have enjoyed getting to know the other interns and full-time employees at ABGSC the most. However, I must admit that the unlimited access to food and Pepsi Max is a close second.

Has there been anything about your experience of working either in finance in general or at ABGSC in particular that has surprised you?
The aspect that has surprised me the most about my experience at ABGSC is the energetic atmosphere in the office. I initially expected a quieter environment, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a vibrant and dynamic workplace. The organization has a flat structure where seniors work closely with juniors, facilitating a continuous exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Tell us about your colleagues at ABGSC; what has been your experience of working with them?
I have only positive things to say about my colleagues in the Equity Research department at ABGSC. They have welcomed all interns with open arms, and although we have only been here for a few weeks, they have made us feel like a natural part of the team. They are all very talented, and never hesitate to help us out with our daily tasks or share insights on how they got to where they are today.

What are your ambitions for future studies and/or your future career path?
This fall, I will continue my studies at the University of Utah with a MSc in Finance. After completing my degree, I look forward to starting my professional career. While I do not have a specific career path planned out, I am certain that I want a role where continuous learning is encouraged.

Can you tell us how your internship experience has equipped you to pursue your future studies/future career path?
This summer, I have the opportunity to explore three different industries within the Equity Research department. I believe this diverse exposure can help me navigate whatever path I wish to pursue in my professional career. Additionally, this internship allows me to bridge the gap between the theory I’ve learnt in school and real-world applications, which I am confident will help me maximize the learning outcome of my upcoming Master’s program.

Can you tell us what appeals to you about a career in the finance industry?
Finance appeals to me because it is fast-paced and challenging. It is a field where there’s always more to learn and ways to develop as a professional. I especially enjoy the fact that in order to truly understand a company’s performance, one must comprehend the broader context in which it operates and stay up-to-date regarding market developments.
