On 26 March the ABGSC Women in Finance Foundation and ABGSC joined the Women’s Finance Day at NHH in Bergen, while serving the role as the main partners of the event which they have done since 2019.

The Women’s Finance Day (“WFD”) has since its launch become an important and popular student event at NHH. This year’s head of the event, Anette Solem Magnussen, shared that the WFD committee received applications from a total of 240 female NHH students who wanted to attend. The approximately 120 students who gained one of the available spots, had the opportunity to learn about the finance industry though a variety of presentations, panel debates and workshops, as well as by interacting directly with representatives from a total of 22 firms during the event.

The day kicked off with an opening speech by the Foundation’s Marianne Daae along with Anette Solem Magnussen. Then followed a panel debate with a particular focus on alternative investments, with the aim to provide deeper insight to a field which likely is unknown to a numerous of students. Among the panel debate participants were Geir Atle Bore, CEO & Funder of FundingPartner, Oda Djupvik, Portfolio Manager at Fondfinans Kapitalforvaltning, Torbjørn Bull Jenssen, CEO of K33, as well as Karin Thorburn, Research Chair Professor of Finance at Norwegian School of Economics. Marius Lorentzen from Finansavisen held the role as panel debate moderator.

For the last couple of years, the event has also included an extra workshop session (this year held on 25 March) called the “Women’s Finance Program” (“WFP”). During the two day sessions, students could attend a total of 14 workshops hosted by the various firms. The program committee of WFD aimed to maximise the impact of the workshops by offering them at three different levels of experience. The highest level catered to students with a well-developed sets of finance skills, who were able to further refine their understanding and therefore be more prepared for internships and potential jobs in the finance industry. Simultaneously, the lowest level presumed no prior knowledge on the part of participants, meaning that we were able to welcome a much broader selection of participants and thus de-mystifying the finance industry early in their academic journeys. ABGSC representatives Simon Brun, Thea Mehlum Thomesen and Thea Bruun Klausen hosted a workshop on WFP on the topic “Blind valuation” on WFP; while on WFD, Jonathan Lysvåg Opås, Thea Mehlum Thomesen and Thea Bruun Klausen held a workshop focusing on understanding multiples and peer valuation.

In the evening, the students joined the firm representatives at a banquet at Grieghallen, during which they got the chance to further mingle with industry representatives and learn more about what it’s like to work in the finance industry.
