The student initiative Women’s Investment Club (“WIC”) at NTNU in Trondheim was joined by Women in AI, another student group on campus, to facilitate a hackathon exclusively for female students on 14 October.
The full-day event grouped the female participants into mixed teams, for which the organisers intentionally combined students with technical-oriented and business-oriented study backgrounds. During the day, the 50 hackathon attendants worked on solving real cases supplied by the event’s corporate partners, Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM) and Sopra Steria, which involved the use of AI, data analysis and applied machine learning in investment management and finance. The day was rounded of with a networking dinner, at which the teams presented their case solutions followed by the announcement of the hackathon’s winning team.
Representative of WIC NTNU, Lise Bragstad, commented that: “Our main goal with producing the hackathon has been to increase the recruitment of female students into the finance industry from a talent pool the industry currently struggle to reach. Today, the finance industry recruits heavily from technical study programmes, but female students in computer science, cybernetics, applied physics and informatics rarely consider finance as a natural career path, and they do not normally attend conventional finance events at universities. At the same time, female business students rarely get the chance to work on technical problems. The hackathon solves both these problems by putting the two groups of students in the same room and giving them concrete, practical experience of what tasks in the sector involves.”
The event was open for registration to all female students at NTNU, regardless of field of study or prior knowledge and experience. With the support of the Foundation and other sponsors of the event, participation could be offered free of charge to make the activity as inclusive as possible to attend.
About Women’s Investment Club (WIC)
WIC (Women’s Investment Club) is a newly established initiative with branches at several universities across Norway (including the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), BI Norwegian Business School, Oslo Metropolitan University, and the University of Oslo) as well as in Denmark, Spain and the UK. The groups focus on building a strong community of women who can support each other, share knowledge, and grow together in the world of finance, in which all female students are invited to attend, whether they are just beginning their finance journey or are already passionate about the field.
WIC’s goal is to create a collaborative space in which women can learn, grow, and connect with like-minded peers while gaining the skills and confidence to pursue careers in finance. Through workshops, events, and social gatherings, the student groups aim to provide:
- Hands-on learning: Practical workshops on investing, financial analysis and career development
- Expert insights: Talks and lectures from finance professionals and industry leaders
- Networking opportunities: Social gatherings where members can connect and share experiences
