Eline Mugaas - 2006
(1969 - )
Eline Mugaas (b. 1969) received her artistic
education from The Cooper Union for the
Advancement of Science and Art in New
York. After a decade in New York, where she
garnered various photographic and scenographic
commissions, Mugaas returned to
Norway in 2000. The Oslo public had previously
been introduced to her work in the
breakthrough exhibition “Let me be your
one way street” at Fotogalleriet (The
Photographers’ Gallery) in 1998.
Eline Mugaas has concentrated on motifs
from the landscape and the city, with the
occasional focus on people. Her enthusiasm
and genuine interest are reflected in the
subject matter, and her works possess a
dynamic quality related both to their composition
and the printing process, bordering on
the painterly.
The remains of a picnic on coastal rocks, cityscapes
and city space, marsh landscapes outside
the big city with sculptural and worn
industrial structures – are among the motifs
that Mugaas has made her own.
There is a forthrightness and immediacy in
the depictions, as well as a sensual style in
their execution that allows the beholder to
discover a certain novelty in the familiar.
Galleri Riis featured new works by Mugaas in
the 2006 exhibition “Bridge & Tunnel”, and
published the book “52 color photographs
from New Jersey and elsewhere” on that
occasion. Mugaas also presented new works
in the 2006 Paris Photo Fair.
Eline Mugaas currently lives and works in
Oslo.
